Rimer's Successful Food Drive

Rimer's Successful Food Drive

Rimer CLC students and families took to heart the idea of giving thanks during the month of November. Classroom School Counselor lessons were on empathy and gratitude. Students, families and staff put the lessons into practice as the building participated in a Rimer Food Drive!

Led by School Counselor Darla Cutright, the Student Ambassadors spent two weeks collecting daily donations from each classroom, Early Learning Programs through fifth grade. Art teacher Colton Brown created a fantastic bulletin board so students could watch the daily tally of donations.

Rimer last held a food drive two years ago, at that time exceeding their goal of 300 donations. This time, there was a more ambitious goal of 500 donations. And the Rimer community exceeded it – with 701 items donated! Both families and Rimer staff participated in the generous donations. All contributions were donated to the Good Neighbors Food Pantry, helping those in need within our community.

During the two week collection period, the Student Ambassadors tracked the grade levels contributions. Contributing was a fun, low-level competition between grades, with all donations appreciated. While there was not a big emphasis on comparing who brought in the most items, third grade students and staff had the highest contributions.

To keep the feeling of empathy going and focus on giving, third grade students were awarded a prize that also gave back. Each student in third grade was given two cookies to decorate. They kept one and decorated and donated the second. The cookies were then boxed up and taken to ACCESS, Inc., an Akron shelter for women and children experiencing homelessness.

Rimer has much to be thankful for, with the generous spirit of the families, students, and staff!.
